In Independent Study and Mentorship this week, we began first by dipping our toes into research by annotating and critically thinking on articles to practice our skills. Then, we followed that with our first assessment of selecting a credible article based on our topic and continued to use those skills on that piece as well. This week I grew in areas of critical thinking throughout these articles, realized I need to work in the areas of better time management, and grew my knowledge on my topic.
My growth area of the week was seen in critical thinking from the article we read and annotated in class to the article we got to choose on our own for our topic. While reading, I leaned into not summarizing the information I read, but recapping my thoughts and questions from what I was reading. This helped me to better analyze the piece of work I was reading and draw more conclusions which is an essential trait within the field of law. On the other hand, this week I needed to work more on my time management skills and focus on taking advantage of my classroom work time. While I like to procrastinate, often I know that I can use my time more efficiently and productively by using the class time provided. My goal for this week is to first get done with my class work and assignments before I allow myself to progress into different areas of work with self accountability. I believe this will help me not only ensure assignments are completed, but also done with quality work.
While getting to dive into my research this week, I also learned lots about my topic of family law for the year. The article I chose to read was something I would describe as a guidebook to the basics of family law and taught me insightful information. I enjoyed getting to read further about all the different ways family attorneys get to impact others lives and make that difference which I earn to do, and to have the ability to create those deep relationships I enjoy pursuing. Additionally, one thing that surprised me within my research was learning about all the different aspects family attorneys take on and how it is wider than just the stereotypical scope. They can possibly cover any aspect that can affect a family which was very compelling to me. Having the opportunity to research and begin the extensiveness of it on this topic already has me intrigued and delighted to be able to continue this research in the upcoming weeks and months.
