This past week in Independent Study and Mentorship we had the opportunity to dive deeper into a specific topic under our chosen field which has set up our next few months in ISM. By narrowing down our topic under our field of study for the year allows us to find mentors that specialize within that specific field and begin to generate a research question within our research. Additionally, we got to further our research within our topic by completing another research assessment and through the topic proposal we got to specify our search.
Under my broad topic of family law, this year I have chosen to specialize in the study of child custody and divorce. This is where my passion is within the field of family law and while there are other interesting aspects inside the field such as adoption and marriage, divorce and child custody are the things special to me. With discovering this, it has narrowed down some of the vagueness as I am now focusing on more family centered cases instead of more property focused only. This will allow me to further my mission of creating personal relationships through hard times of life such as child custody and divorce. Also from my own experiences, I feel like I am the best suited to offer my knowledge and experience to the specific field of divorce and child custody as I will be able to offer first hand experience to experienced professionals.
Additionally, this week we got to work on furthering our research and since I also decided on my specific topic of child custody and divorce, I chose to research the specificities of child custody. I got to learn a lot of legal terminology this past week within child custody and the different types of custody which has been extremely beneficial to learn before entering a law environment such as in my mentorship.
Finally, this week has been very crucial in narrowing down my search and starting to think about my research question. I hope in the upcoming week I get to further prepare myself for the professional symposium as it is quickly approaching in a little over a week as I want to be the best prepared for this incredible opportunity. I would like to work most on my interview questions and also answering interview questions to feel the most prepared.
