Next week in Independent Study and Mentorship, we are diving into our first professional event of our Professional Symposium at Panther Creek High School. During this symposium, we will have the opportunity to meet with professionals in the area and get to interview with them and learn more about professionality and getting to know professionals. Therefore, this past week in ISM, we have had the opportunity to finalize our preparations for this event as well as continuing our research in order to construct our basis to be able to converse about during our symposium next week.
To prepare for the symposium this week, we began printing our resumes and handing them out to our peers in order to practice that interaction with professionals. One of the harder things we did this week but very beneficial, was we created our elevator pitch for when we do interviews with professionals. This quick 30 second to 1 minute introduction seems quite simple, however it is very significant as it has the purpose of showcasing you and what you stand for to other people and can either highly impress them or leave them uninterested. Therefore, constructing this pitch was a difficult task, but it gave me something to rely on next week when entering our interviews. Additionally, we got to present them in front of the class in order to help build our confidence within these interviews as they can be slightly intimidating. Another beneficial exercise we did in class was practice our interviewing skills with peers in order to continue building our confidence and constructing answers for anything that can be thrown our way.
Furthermore, we got to continue pursuing our research this week and I chose an article specific to my focused topic of child custody, and how to put a child-focus on custody cases. This article further enhanced my understanding and heart for the field as it has become a new mission for myself to find ways to make this field more child-focused. While the complexities of the situation are present, it furthered my desire for the year to be able to work with a mentor in order to continue searching for more ways to enhance this field. I am extremely looking forward to the professional symposium next week to further my professionality and meet with inspiring individuals and hopefully potentially explore more about my topic.
