This past week in Independent Study and Mentorship we spent the week reflecting on our experience at the Professional Symposium and began the quest for our mentor and looking for interviews.
The first part of the week we spent reflecting and conversing with others about our time at the Symposium. It seemed that everyone had a great experience at the event and everyone gained a lot of knowledge and experience. It was really a great first step before leading into interviews and even mentorships as it gave us a glimpse of what that would be like. It was nice to be able to talk to my peers and we got to realize that we were all nervous, but all ended up doing well and meeting great people. The reflection time as a class was also a great opportunity to all talk about what we need to improve on before interviews which was mainly working on being able to start a direct conversation and help it flow throughout which I truly believe only comes from experience.
Next, the hard part of the week was beginning to contact professionals in high hopes for an interview, which is way more difficult than it appears. We primarily spent the week researching professionals in the area to even be able to contact, which I did end up lucking out on thanks to Mr. Green with two great legal websites. I found a variety of certified family attorneys through the websites, Super Lawyer and Texas Board of Legal Specialization. After constructing a list, I started to connect with all these individuals on LinkedIn hoping for some connections back to start relationships, but nothing has come yet. This upcoming week, I plan on creating a cold call script and begin cold calling a variety of people in order to set up interviews. While this process is a little out of my comfort zone, and I know it will come with a bunch of rejection, I am prepared as I know it will lead me to the mentor who is just right for me. Wish me luck!
