Last week in Independent Study and Mentorship, we began reaching out to professionals to attempt to conduct interviews. I emailed a variety of around 10 professionals in hope of a response in order to potentially set up an interview. The emailing process was decently simple as long as I could find their contact information and I reached out to as many professionals I could find. I also continued to connect with professionals on LinkedIn in hopes of more connections. After reaching out to many people, on Friday I got 2 responses which I was extremely excited about! One with a professional, Court Smith, who specializes in generalized law, and the other response from Rebecca Armstrong, who is a managing partner at a family law firm. I got an interview scheduled with Rebecca that I had this morning and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have gotten to speak with her.
In my interview this morning, it was my first interview and I was feeling all the nerves but I was so excited to be able to speak with her and expand on my knowledge. I learned so much from asking questions and conversations about how she found her way in family law, her favorite parts of her job, how she deals with a variety of clients, and boundaries. The primary advice she gave me was to always be open minded as there are always a variety of opportunities to explore and you want to find something you truly love and enjoy which was reassuring to me as it showed you don’t always have to have it all figured out. Another part of the interview, I really enjoyed was listening to how she values personal relationships and implements that into her work by working with clients through hard times and being optimistic while also being realistic and having those real conversations. It was a phenomenal experience and I am so grateful for the interview.
